Powder is the propellent used to discharge the payload of the shotshell. It varies in size, burn rate, and shape. It is DANGEROUS to mix reloading data for one specific load with another. | |||||
The common shapes of smokeless powder are spherical ball, stick, and flake. Categorized by burn rate. Burn rates are NOT LINEAR and vary from manufacturer lot to lot. One powder listed next to another on a burn rate chart, DOES NOT MAKE IT SUITABLE FOR SUBSTUTION. |

It is measured by weight in "grains"(gn). One pound of smokeless powder contains 7000 gn. | |||||
It's usually sold in 1lb., 4lb., 8lb. kegs. | |||||
